Blazers Rally Falls Short in Five-Set Battle with Majors

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven volleyball team got out to a 2–0 start in its match against the Majors at Millsaps College, but the Blazers fell short in the final three sets, 3-2, Tuesday night inside the Hangar Dome.

Belhaven's defense was strong in its first two sets, allowing Millsaps to a .067 attack percentage in the first set, defeating the Majors, 25–16. 

In the second set, the Blazers (7-11) continued its strong defensive presence, limiting the Majors (4–10) to a .035 attack percentage. Belhaven was able to hold off Millsaps to win the second set, 28–26, to leave the match at two sets to none.

In the first two sets, the Green and Gold out-attacked the Majors 27–20 in the kill department, and Millsaps committed more errors than Belhaven (16-13). 

The Majors were able to rebound in the final three sets, out-killing the Blazers 44-27. Millsaps took the final three sets, 27-25, 25-18, 15-11.

Blaykleigh Smythe led the Green and Gold with 14 kills, four blocks and a season high seven digs.

Lauren Whiting set a new season high with 13 kills, missing her career of 15 set last Oct. 31 vs. Dillard. She also added five digs. 

Kelly Aholt also set a season high in assists with 46, missing her career mark of 49, also set in the match against Dillard last Oct. 31. The junior also killed five attacks, assisted on two blocks and added seven digs. 

Abbey Herman led the Blazers with a season and career-high 34 digs. 

Jackie Gunderson also notched 29 digs, a new season high for the senior. The Grand Prairie, Texas native also added eight kills. 

Hope Tourney also collected nine kills and assisted on one block for the Blazers.

Erica Bennett totaled 21 kills for the Majors, and Ashley Zamjahn recorded 34 digs.

In the history between the Blazers and the Majors, this is the second consecutive match to go to a deciding fifth set, and the last three matches have gone four sets or longer. Millsaps now leads the all-time series 34-14. 

Belhaven will return home on Friday night inside Rugg Arena to resume ASC East play. The Blazers will take on ninth-ranked Texas Dallas. Prior to the match, the Green and Gold will honor our three seniors, Annelle Anderson, Jackie Gunderson and Abbey Herman. First serve will commence at 7 p.m.
