Aholt Eclipses 2,000 Assists as Blazers Split Two at Centenary

SHREVEPORT, La. - Needing one more assist to acquire 2,000 in her illustrious career, it did not take long for junior setter Kelly Aholt to accomplish that mark as the Blazers split their doubleheader on Friday afternoon against Austin College and Mills in the Centenary Halloween Tournament inside the Gold Dome on the campus of Centenary College. 

Belhaven fell in four sets to Austin College before taking the nightcap match against Mills with a 3-0 sweep. 

Aholt earned her 2,000th assist on the first point acquired by the Green and Gold in the morning matchup against the Roos. She becomes the fourth player to eclipse this feat in her career, according to acquired records. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native finished with 55 assists on the day. 

In the opener against the Roos, the Blazers got off to a slow start with seven attack errors to the opponent's three. The Roos took the opener, 14-25. 

The Green and Gold countered in the second set to even the match at one set apiece. The Blazers were able to take the second set by notching one more kill than the Roos, 18-17, in the 26-24 set victory. 

In the third set, however, the Roos controlled the set to go up 2-1 against the Blazers, falling 17-25. 

In the fourth set, Belhaven countered once again, but it was Austin College who took the match with the 24-26 set victory. 

Annelle Anderson led the Blazers with 15 kills in the match, with an attack percentage of .379. 

Lauren Whiting had 12 kills, three digs and assisted on two blocks for the Blazers. 

Aholt assisted on 43 kills for the Blazers, while earning three service aces. 

Abbey Herman totaled a match-high 25 digs, while Jackie Gunderson had nine kills and 15 digs. 

In the second set against Mills (Calif.), the Blazers were able to sweep away the Cyclones with set scores of 25-15, 25-14 and 26-24. 

Belhaven out-attacked their opponent 45-17. Belhaven's .364 attack percentage is the second-highest percentage this season, while the opponent's attack percentage of .038 is the fifth-lowest for the Green and Gold this season. 

Blaykleigh Smythe led Belhaven with 12 kills, while averaging a .364 percentage for the match. She also had five digs and assisted on one block. 

Gunderson finished the night with 10 kills without committing an error in the victory in 18 attacks (.556 percentage). The Grand Prairie, Texas native totaled 11 digs and two service aces. 

Hope Tourney recorded with a .353 attack percentage with nine kills on 17 attacks while committing three errors. 

Evelyn Parker killed five attacks and blocked one Mills attack. 

Lexi Brantley led the Blazers with 26 assists, while collecting four digs and three kills. 

Herman added 11 digs to her Friday total in the win. 

The Blazers (11-17) will conclude the regular season on Saturday with two more matches in the Centenary Halloween Tournament. Belhaven will take on host Centenary at 12 p.m. and will conclude with Rust at 6 p.m. inside the Gold Dome.
