JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven men's soccer team won its third consecutive match Thursday night, defeating current ASC leader Texas at Dallas, 3-1, inside Belhaven Bowl Stadium.
Somto Ngwudike led the way for the Blazers, becoming the second Belhaven player to score two goals in a single game this season. Ngwudike got the Blazers on the scoreboard in the 12th minute of play, finding the back of the net off of a
John Dunbar corner kick. Then late in the second half, the junior midfielder received a long pass from defender
Phillip Nichols, took a dribble past a Comet defender and slotted a shot past the goalkeeper to give Belhaven a 3-0 lead.
Sam Joy registered the second Blazers goal in the 29th minute, heading in a long cross off the foot of Dunbar.
Belhaven nearly found the back of the net several more times in the second half. Ngwudike,
Ryan Thomas,
Joravar Malli and Dunbar each had valiant shot attempts that were just saved by the Texas Dallas goalie.
The Blazers tallied 13 total shots and nine shots on goal while holding the Comets to just two total shots and one shot on goal. Jude Anuwe scored the lone Texas Dallas goal with just 48 seconds remaining in the second half.
The Green and Gold is now 4-0 at home since moving into the new Belhaven Bowl Stadium on Oct. 6. The Blazers move to 7-7-1 on the season with the win while Texas Dallas falls to 11-4-1.
Next up, the Blazers host Howard Payne University on Saturday, Oct. 29 in the team's regular season finale. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
