JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven men's soccer team won its fourth straight match Saturday night, earning a 3-2 overtime victory over Howard Payne University inside Belhaven Bowl Stadium.
It looked as if the Blazers would come away with a 2-1 win in regulation, but just under a minute before the final buzzer, Howard Payne's Josue Vasquez headed in the equalizing goal to send the game into overtime.
However, it wouldn't take the Green and Gold long to take care of business in overtime. Just 70 seconds into the overtime period,
Kobe Van Someren took control of loose ball in the box after a failed Howard Payne clearance, and fired a low, hard shot past the goalkeeper into the back of the net to give the Blazers the win.
The Blazers controlled the match for the majority of the 91 minutes played, outshooting the Yellow Jackets 21 to three while also taking five corner kicks to Howard Payne's zero.
Piercen Burchfield gave Belhaven an early lead, finding the back of the net on a header off of a cross from
Ryan Thomas. The goal is the first of Burchfield's Belhaven career.
The Blazers (8-7-1) held the Yellow Jackets (3-9-3) scorless through the first half and entered the halftime period with a 1-0 advantage. But Howard Payne's Tim Murphy evened things up at one apiece seven minutes into the second half.
Belhaven's
Johnathan Goliday got the lead right back just four minutes later, shooting a perfect strike into the top left corner of the goal off of a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box.
Van Someren paced the Blazers with four total shots while Goliday,
John Dunbar and
Somto Ngwudike added three shots each.
With tonight's win, Belhaven remains unbeated at Belhaven Bowl Stadium, moving to 5-0.
