Blazers Victorious against Majors in Five-Set Marathon

JACKSON, Miss. - When head coach Justin Dee arrived at Belhaven four years ago, one goal for his seniors was to defeat Millsaps. The Blazers finally accomplished the task with a five-set victory against the Majors Tuesday night inside Rugg Arena.

After dropping the last two matches in five sets to Millsaps, the Blazers (10-16) had the Majors on the ropes with the match-up on their home floor.

After splitting the first two sets, the Blazers took the crucial third set, thanks to committing four errors to Millsaps' six.

In the fourth set, Millsaps had the upper hand, out killing the Blazers 11-7 to force a deciding fifth set for the third consecutive match.

The Green and Gold got out to an early 3-0 lead in the fifth and decisive set, but the Majors took eight of the next 11 points to give Millsaps the 8-6 advantage before the Blazers called a timeout.

Leading 10-6, Millsaps' offense fell apart in the final points, with Belhaven outscoring the visitors 10-4 to secure the match.

Tuesday's win snaps a seven-match losing streak to the Majors (6-17), with the last win coming on Sept. 27, 2011 at Millsaps. This is the first win at home against their Riverside Rival in almost seven years. The Green and Gold swept the Majors on Oct. 30, 2009.

Jackie Gunderson earned her 12th double-double of her career and the fourth of the year with a match-best 18 kills and 28 digs.

Lauren Whiting killed 14 attacks and added 17 digs for her second double-double of the year.

Abbey Herman collected 50 of the Blazers 132 digs. With her performance, the senior continues to lead the American Southwest Conference in the category, averaging 5.51 per set.

Blaykleigh Smythe finished the match with 13 kills and assisted on four blocks.

Hope Tourney finished with five blocks, including two solo blocks on the Majors attack.

Kelly Aholt will look to earn her 2,000th assist this weekend on road. With the 52 she had on Tuesday, she needs one more assist to become the fourth Belhaven volleyball player to accomplish this feat. She missed her career high of 59, set earlier this season vs. Texas Tyler. She also assisted on three blocks.

Lexi Brantley also added 18 digs in the win for the Green and Gold.

Payton Passantino led the Majors with 13 kills and 23 digs, while Ashley Zamjahn added 39 digs.

The Blazers' 231 attacks and 132 digs are the most this season.

Belhaven earned its 15th win overall against the Majors in 49 all-time matchups.

Now at 10 wins on the season, the Blazers have secured double digit wins for the third consecutive season and the 11th time in the last 13 years.

Belhaven will conclude the season at the Centenary Halloween Tournament, beginning Friday. The Green and Gold will battle with Austin College and Mills (Calif.) before wrapping up the weekend with host Centenary and Rust.
