JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven and Millsaps volleyball programs are teaming up to collect canned goods for We Will Go Ministries, in relation to its Food Pantry.
"Our goal is to raise awareness and the opportunity to give an organization that has great need," said assistant coach
Laura Grace Swindler. "I had the opportunity this summer to be a part of the ministry, and seeing and hearing the stories from the people down there made me realize that we should trust in the Lord and that He will provide."
Fans can bring in one canned good for the price of admission to Tuesday's home volleyball match against the Majors.
The Food Pantry at We Will Go serves about 150 people or families each month. The Pantry also serves the community with the Porch Ministries. The ministry goes out into the community, and delivers food, along with a bible verse or handwritten note that is delivered to those who are on their porch.
The Food Ministry not only has the Food Pantry, but it also serves a Sunday meal after their worship service, and it also shares with the local community in providing healthy snacks to The Fountain, which serves the youth in the community with tutoring services.
With the two squads already taking the court earlier this season, 33 cans have been collected from the first match-up.
"Since both Belhaven and Millsaps are close to We Will Go, it engages our community, and since we are both a part of this community, I wanted to offer the opportunity to have both schools participate in this event," added Swindler. "When I asked Coach [Jamie] Fisher about this project and how we could help, she was right on board with this cause."
With two locations in downtown Jackson, We Will Go Ministries focuses on the scripture of Micah 6:8, "Whom shall I send? Here I am Lord, send me." Not only does the ministry have a food pantry open year-round, but it also does ministry with its Clothing Ministry, as well as the Ground and Garden Ministry. Also, the ministry has its very own coffee shop called The Urban 'Sip.
"This is bigger than volleyball, bigger than athletics," commented Swindler. The more people that know, the better the numbers of the cans that we receive and also the awareness it brings."
The Blazers will host the Majors in their final home match of the 2016 season on Tuesday night inside Rugg Arena. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
