Belhaven Volley Gears Up for Final Texas Road Swing

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven volleyball team prepares for its final trip to the Lone Star State in the 2016 regular season with matchups against LeTourneau and East Texas Baptist this weekend.

The Blazers (8-15) will look to secure double digit wins for the third consecutive season and the 11th time in the last 13 years.

The Green and Gold are coming off a 1-2 weekend at the second ASC Crossover of the season at Texas Dallas. The Blazers defeated Sul Ross State in the opener before being swept by McMurry and dropping a five-set battle with Concordia Texas.

Belhaven split their weekend matchup with the YellowJackets and the Tigers back on the weekend of Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. The Blazers were swept by ETBU on Sept. 30 before sweeping LETU the following day.

In program history, the Blazers will look to snap a four-match losing streak against East Texas Baptist, who leads the series, 7-2. Against LeTourneau, the Green and Gold have evened up the series with four wins and losses apiece, snapping a three-match losing streak their last time out.

The YellowJackets (7-20) have been on the blocking game this season, averaging 1.94 per set, good for third in the ASC. Leading the block brigade is senior Jenny Olejar with 89 blocks, including 11 solo blocks.

The Blazers will look to attack heavily on the Tigers (7-11), who are last in the ASC in opponent attack percentage (.204). However, ETBU is third in the conference in kills (12.13) and fourth in blocks (1.92).

Blaykleigh Smythe continues her career pace for the Green and Gold in 2016, totaling a career-high 206 kills, averaging 2.06 kills per set. Her attacking percentage of .282 is good for 8th in the ASC and 16th in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA).

Abbey Herman is currently tops in the ASC in digs (5.11 per set) and that average is good for eighth-best in the NCCAA.

The Blazers will take on LeTourneau Friday night at 7 p.m. and will wrap up the weekend with East Texas Baptist at 2 p.m.
