JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to Rhodes College Wednesday night inside Belhaven Bowl Stadium.Â
Kelsey Sweeney gave the Lynx a 1-0 lead 25 minutes into the first half off of a Nicolette Glidden corner kick. Rhodes (8-3-1) totaled nine corners for the game while the Blazers (4-9) tallied just one.Â
Belhaven was unable to find the back of the net in the first half and fired just one shot through the first 25 minutes of the second half.
But the Blazers kept fighting and were able to score the equalizing goal in the 70th minute of play as
Erica Rempel recorded her sixth goal of the season.
Jessica Mahoney played a through ball to Rempel on the left side of the 18-yard box, and the freshman took one initial dribble before poking a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal.Â
Ten minutes later, with the game still tied at one apiece, Rempel nearly found the back of the net once again, but her shot was saved by the fingertips of Rhodes goalkeeper Anna Maldonado.Â
With neither team able to break the tie through ninety minutes, the game headed to overtime. Less than three minutes into the overtime period, Rachel Coyle scored the game-winning goal for the Lynx.Â
Rhodes finished the game with 15 total shots to Belhaven's five, but each team put four shots on goal.Â
Rempel led the Blazers with two shot while Mahoney,
Dominique Farias and
Amber Thomas added a shot each.Â
