CLARKSVILLE, Ark. - The Belhaven men's soccer team wrapped up its 2016 road schedule on a good note Saturday afternoon in Clarksville, Ark., defeating the University of the Ozarks 1-0 in overtime.
The Blazers and the Eagles played 90 minutes of scoreless soccer, leading to the Green and Gold's second overtime game of the season.
Belhaven totaled 11 shots in regulation and recorded four corner kicks in the final five minutes, but were unable to find the back of the net.
But less than two minutes into the first overtime period,
Kobe Van Someren broke past the Ozarks defense and fired a shot on goal from 10 yards out. Eagles goalie Luis Mena was able to deflect the shot but the rebound came right back to Van Someren, who sent a cross into
Carmine Caruso streaking down the center of the field. Caruso headed Van Someren's pass into the bottom left corner of the goal, winning the game for the Blazers.
Caruso's goal is the first of his Belhaven career. Van Someren collects his second assist of the year.
Van Someren led the Blazers with three shots while Caruso,
Sam Joy,
Somto Ngwudike and
Tom Aston fired two shots each. Belhaven finished with 13 total shots, their second-higest total of the season.
The Belhaven (5-7-1) defense tallied their conference-leading sixth shutout of the season and third in the past four games.The Blazers held the Eagles (9-3-2) to just two shots on goal.
Next up, the Green and Gold returns home to Belhaven Bowl Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 22 to host Louisiana College. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
