Belhaven Volley’s Defense Stifles Yellowjackets

JACKSON, Miss. - The Blazers volleyball team rebounded from a sweep defeat Friday night to earn a sweep of LeTourneau 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-23) Saturday evening inside Rugg Arena.

The Blazers (7-10) came out strong in the first set with a .197 attacking percentage, and limited the Yellowjackets (7-14) to an .044 attack percentage.

In the second set, the teams were evenly matched on kills with 13 each, but LeTourneau committed two more errors than Belhaven, which helped seal the set.

In the clinching set, the Blazers defense was strong, only allowing the Yellowjackets to a -.077 attack percentage, with 9 kills but 12 errors.

"Tonight, we made wise decisions, and we were able to make great executions," said head coach Justin Dee

For the match, the Blazers finished with a .151 attack percentage, and only allowed LETU to an .031 attack. This is the fifth time this season that Belhaven has limited their opposition to an .100 attacking percentage or lower.

Blaykleigh Smythe and Hope Tourney each killed 10 attacks for the Blazers in the win. The duo also add three blocks in the contest as well.

"We talked about bringing the boom this week with Hope, and she really executed on that tonight", Dee added. "Her character shows great positivity on the floor for us; she lets mistakes move on, and that is the biggest thing as a team that we are trying to do."

Abbey Herman and Jackie Gunderson each totaled 16 digs each for the Green and Gold, while Kelly Aholt helped on 33 attacks.

Savanna Stutts led the Yellowjackets with eight kills, while Audrey Galindo notched 16 digs.

Belhaven will look to continue the winning ways on Tuesday night, as the Green and Gold make the trek up Riverside Drive to take on Millsaps in the Riverside Rumble: volleyball edition. The first of two meetings with the Majors will begin at 7 p.m. in the Hangar Dome.
