Carpenter's Late Free Throws Help Blazers Sink McMurry 72-71

JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Blazers overcame a late deficit Monday night to defeat McMurry University 72-71 in Rugg Arena.

With 1.2 seconds remaining, senior Josh Carpenter sank the first of two free throws to tie the game at 71. After a timeout by McMurry, Carpenter stepped back up to the line and sank the second, to give Belhaven the lead.

On the ensuing inbounds pass, fellow senior De'la Mayers intercepted the ball and was able to dribble away the final second to secure the victory for Belhaven.

The Blazers trailed for a majority of the game, with their first lead after the opening basket coming with 13 minutes remaining in the game. At that point, the teams traded the lead 10 times through the remainder of the game.

Mayers had a big role in the game, tying the school record, one which he shares twice already, with six blocks in the game. Mayers also had a double-double, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Carpenter also had a big night for the Blazers, leading the scoring with 22 points. Carpenter overcame three missed free throws earlier in the game to sink his last four attempts, four of the final five points for Belhaven in the game.

Carpenter had six three pointers in the game, one shy of the school record. He also had three assists in the game.

Josh Gaskin was also in double figures on the night, finishing with 15 points and three blocks.

Belhaven finished with 46 percent shooting on the night and 42 percent shooting from behind the arc. Belhaven was outrebounded 40-35 in the game but had 11 blocks to just one for the Warhawks.

The Blazers will return to action on Thursday as they make the trip across Texas to play at Sul Ross State University. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. in Alpine, Texas.
