Belhaven falls in heartbreaker to Ozarks, 79-80

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Blazers fell in a heartbreaking loss in Rugg Arena Saturday afternoon to the University of the Ozarks, 79-80.
 
De'la Mayers' free throw with 7.1 seconds left gave Belhaven a 79-77 lead. However, Josh Berard of Ozarks hit a jumper on a foul with 1.1 seconds remaining to tie the game at 79. Berard then hit his free throw to put the Eagles ahead.
 
 Josh Carpenter's desperation three from about 35 feet rattled the front and back of the rim, but fell out as Belhaven fell to Ozarks to wrap up the first run through of the ASC East schedule.
 
Mayers led the Blazers with 20 points in the contest and also had a team-high eight rebounds. The senior also finished with three steals, two blocks, and two assists.

Carpenter was right behind Mayers, finishing with 19 points. Carpenter also had six rebounds, and an assist.
 
Josh Gaskin joined the duo in double figures, finishing with 16 points. Gaskin had four rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
 
Jack Griffiths led the Blazers with six assists in the game. Belhaven finished with a season high 22 assists overall.
 
The Blazers also had 11 steals and seven blocks in the game. 

Belhaven is back in action on Thursday and will face off against the University of the Ozarks again, this time in Clarksville, Arkansas to start the second round of games against ASC East teams. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. against the Eagles.
