JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Men's Basketball team dropped a non-conference battle against Huntingdon College 70-87 Tuesday evening in the first of three straight at home.
Senior
De'la Mayers led the way for the Blazers with a near perfect night, but it was not enough as the Hawks outscored Belhaven in the second half to pull away.
Mayers went 11-for-11 from the field inside Rugg Arena, with seven of the shots coming in the second half. His only miss on the night came on a single free throw as he finished with a team high 23 points.
The Oak Grove, Louisiana native also grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Blazers in the game. Mayers would add two assists, two blocks, and a steal in 32 minutes.
Fellow seniors
Josh Carpenter and
Josh Gaskin were also in double figures for the Blazers in the contest.
Carpenter finished with 18 points, including a pair of shots from behind the arc and six free throws. Carpenter also had four rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Gaskin finished with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Gaskin also was 3-for-3 from the charity stripe. He also finished with four rebounds and an assist.
Jack Griffiths and
David Simpson also had six points in the game with both newcomers hitting a pair of three pointers in the game.
The Blazers remain at home for the second of three straight in Rugg Arena with an ASC East Division matchup against the University of Texas at Dallas. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. against the Comets.
