Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Layton Jackson

Blazers Fall in Home Opener

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Women's Soccer team fell in its season opener to Asbury University 3-1 on Saturday night.

The Eagles (2-2) scored two goals in the first half, and they added a third goal early in the second hald, that gave them the inside track for the win.

However, the Blazers added a late charge with a strong final 30 minutes, that included 10 shots toward the Asbury keeper, including one off the post and one pushed off the crossbar by Brooke Perkins.

The Blazers lone goal came in the 71st minute, off of the foot of sophomore Jessica Mahoney.

Freshman goalkeeper Alexis Molero contributed nine saves in the match.

"I felt that we were the better team in the second half, trying to do everything we could, but we just couldn't put it away," said head coach Josue Sabillon.

The Blazers fall to 12-5-1 in home openers and Saturday's loss snaps an 8-0-1 mark in their last nine home opening matches.

"It was nice to get that one goal back, but in the end, from the first game to the second game, I was very proud of the girls and of the way that they fought," Sabillon said. "That game will give us the experience under our belt needed with the two remaining non-conference matches before we start conference play."

Belhaven will return to action in the midweek as the Blazers travel to Memphis, Tennessee for an evening contest against the Rhodes Lynx at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9.
