JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven Volleyball team dominated in the first day of action at the Huntingdon Invitational. They bounce back after Tuesday's loss to finish opening week at 2-1.
The Blazers defeated Sewanee: The University of the South 3-0, followed by another victory over Piedmont College 3-1.
Belhaven stretched their win streak versus Sewanee, as they won three straight sets with scores of 25-20, 25-18, and 25-17. In the all-time series, the Blazers are 3-0 against the Tigers.
In the first match, outside/ right- side hitter
Chae Levy led the way with 10 kills. Outside hitter
Lauren Whiting wasn't too far behind, as she contributed eight kills in the win over the Tigers.
Sophomore
Kelly Aholt's passing play proved to be a fire-starter, as the Blazers switched to a 5-1 offense. She compiled 23 assists.
In that match, Senior
Cassidy Fitzpatrick's dominating defense was too much for Sewanee, as she recorded 14 digs.
Lauren Whiting and
Blaykleigh Smythe each contributed 2 blocks.
Head Coach
Justin Dee enjoyed watching the squad compete, saying "Sometimes I was able to just sit back and enjoy the work we have put in to be the team we were today".
"It's always fun to win, but really fun to win playing as well as we played today", said Dee.
The Blazers also battled with Piedmont, finishing the match with a 3-1 victory. The win broke the 1 match losing streak against the Lions. They went 25-17, 25-23, 26-28 and 25-21. Belhaven is now 2-1 in the all-time series against Piedmont.
Middle blocker
Blaykleigh Smythe dominated for the Blazers with 11 kills and 3 blocks.
Kelly Aholt hammered out 37 assists and 2 aces.
Cassidy Fitzpatrick reigned in 21 digs, while
Abbey Herman and
Allie Perkins each had 13 digs.
On the day's competition as a whole, Dee said "Everyone contributed in one way or another today.
Annelle Anderson and Chae played lights out in the first match. Lauren and Blaykleigh were unstoppable in the second match."
Up next for the Blazers is day 2 of the Huntingdon Invitational, where they take on the Huntingdon College Hawks at 9AM. In a 1PM matchup, Belhaven will square up against the Talladega College Tornadoes.
