JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Volleyball team fell
to Sul Ross State University in its first match of this weekend's ASC Crossover Challenge Friday afternoon.
Belhaven found itself in its second consecutive 5-set match, falling 2-3 to the Lobos in only the second-ever meeting between the two schools.
Despite being down two sets early after falling 19-25 in both of the first two sets, the Blazers fought their way into a fifth set by winning sets three and four 25-21 and 25-15, respectively.
Cassidy Fitzpatrick totaled 27 digs against Sul Ross, helping the senior to pass the 400 career digs mark at Belhaven in the match. Junior Jackie Gunderson and sophomore Allie Perkins were also on fire defensively for the Blazers, as each recorded 16 digs. Gunderson also had 11 kills and two assists in the game.
Senior Chae Levy also had 11 kills in the match, while freshman Lauren Whiting finished with 10. Kelly Aholt led the way in assists, collecting 43 in the game, a career high at Belhaven.
Molly Boyer led the way defensively up front, recording seven blocks in the game. Boyer also joined Perkins with three aces.
The Blazers continue in the ASC Crossover Challenge on Saturday and will face Howard Payne University first. That match is set to start at 10 a.m. The Blazers will also play Concordia University of Texas at 3 p.m. in the afternoon.
