JACKSON, Miss – The Belhaven Volleyball team hosted and fell to Riverside Drive rival Millsaps College for a 7PM matchup in Rugg Arena.
In the first five game match of the season, the Green and Gold fell 2-3 to Millsaps, putting them at 6-6 on the season.
The Blazers fell 16-25 in the first set, but went on to win two straight second and third sets at 25-18 and 28-26. Millsaps would take the fourth and fifth sets at 25-21 and 15-4.
Sophomore
Kelly Aholt had a massive offensively productive evening, finishing the match with 32 assists. She also collected 8 blocks.
A number of Aholt's assists resulted in 8 kills for Freshman
Lauren Whiting.
Senior
Molly Boyer is approaching 200 career blocks as a Blazer, adding 5 to her 152 total in the loss to Millsaps. Boyer also contributed 9 kills.
The senior out of Valencia, California,
Cassidy Fitzpatrick also provided defensive spunk for the Blazers as she collected 32 digs. She is on her way to 400 career digs, standing at 396 after tonight. Fitzpatrick added four assists and two aces to the Blazers stat sheet.
Annelle Anderson was on fire defensively, as she totaled 9 blocks versus Millsaps. She also contributed one assist. Anderson is coming off of a monster weekend versus East Texas Baptist University and LeTourneau University, where she amassed 12 kills and 5 blocks.
Jackie Gunderson is now past 600 career digs as a Blazer, collecting 22 against the Millsaps Majors. She also contributed 8 kills, propelling her to just ten kills away from achieving a 250 career total. Gunderson added one ace versus Millsaps.
Sophomore
Allie Perkins contributed one ace in the match.
Junior
Abbey Herman provided solid defense for the blazers, collecting 15 digs in the evening's matchup.
On his team's performance against the rivals, head coach
Justin Dee said "Frustrating loss...I think everybody gave their best effort, it was just not enough tonight."
"Defense was just on fire today. They dug the ball up, we just weren't aggresive enough on the offensive end" said Dee.
Next, the Blazers will travel to Belton, Texas to compete in the ASC Crossover Tournament, being held on September 25 and 26. On Friday, the Green and Gold will take on Sul Ross State University at 2:30 PM. The Blazers will play in a double-header on Saturday, going up against Howard Payne University at 10 AM, and Concordia University- Texas at 3 PM.
