Game Recap: Volleyball | | Kelly Randall

Belhaven Volleyball Finishes Invitational 2-2

JACKSON, Miss. – The Blazers Volleyball team split the second day of the Belhaven/ Millsaps Invitational, beating Philander Smith College 3-0, and falling to Millsaps 1-3.
 
In the early matchup against Philander Smith, Belhaven, set one resulted in a 25-11 win for the Blazers, as the second set ended in another victory for Belhaven at 25-17.
 
The third set ended in favor for the Blazers at 25-21.
 
Senior Chae Levy led the way in kills with 12, as she also collected 6 digs.  Sophomore Allie Perkins collected 21 assists while Kelly Aholt finished with 13 assists and 4 digs.
 
Head Coach Justin Dee had this to say about the team's performance versus Philander: "The girls played great, came out and dominated from point number (1) and played really well no matter what position or player was in the match."
 
"Allie came in and set a wonderful match, spread the ball out to her attackers- her timing to her middles was a beautiful thing to see."
 
The Blazers also faced the host team, the Millsaps Majors in an evening matchup at the Hanger Dome.  They fell to Millsaps 1-3 in an intense match, where Belhaven fans created an electric atmosphere.
 
On the fan turnout and the impact it had on the Blazers' play, Dee said "The crowd that made the trip over to Millsaps was unbelievable.  Our girls played unbelievably."
 
The first two sets ended in victories for Millsaps, 25-21, and 25-9.  The second set went the Blazers' way, ending in a 25-22 victory. 
 
The final and most intense set saw the Majors over the Blazers 27-25.
 
Lauren Whiting led the way in kills with 10, while Molly Boyer and Blakleigh Smythe contributed 8 each.
 
Kelly Aholt collected 37 assists and 1 ace and 2 blocks.  Senior Cassidy Fitzpatrick finished the match with 24 digs, while Jackie Gunderson had 23 digs and one ace.
 
Junior Abbey Herman finished with 15 digs.
 
Coach Dee said "I was so proud of our effort and the Belhaven Volleyball Family who made tonight a great environment! I'm looking forward to a great year!"
 
Up next for the Blazers is their first ASC conference game against East Texas Baptist University on Friday, September 18th.  The game will take place in Marshall, Texas at 7PM.
