JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven football team dropped its season opener to No. 1 Wisconsin-Whitewater 62-6 at H.T. Newell Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Blazers (0-2) were only able to gain 187 yards of offense, while the defending national champions compiled 372 offensive yards mostly on the ground.
The Blazers lone scoring effort came in the third quarter thanks to a 29-yard catch and run by sophomore wide receiver Jacob McNeill from a pass by freshman quarterback Clayton Webb.
Webb finished 20-for-36 for 126 yards with two interceptions and three sacks.
Belhaven trailed the Warhawks (1-0) 42-0 at halftime.
Junior wide receiver Nate Williams finished with seven receptions and 47 yards.
Sophomore running back Marquis Hedge led the offense on the ground with seven carries and 33 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, junior linebacker Steven Joiner and junior defensive back Alvin Vaughn led the defensive tackles, each finishing with seven in the game.
The Blazers will make the short trip to Clinton, Mississippi on Saturday, September 19 to face off against cross-town rival Mississippi College. The match up is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
