Blazers split SSAC doubleheader with Bethel

JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Blazers Softball team split its SSAC doubleheader with Bethel University on Wednesday, falling in game one 4-3 before winning game two 9-1 in five innings.

The Blazers fell behind 1-0 early in game one, but answered back with three runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead.

Dani Craft started off the scoring with a homerun to left center that tied the game at one.

After Ashlee Hitt and Emily Todd both reached in the next two at bats, Dominique Corona gave the Blazers the lead with a single to center.

Danielle Bacon then gave the Blazers a 3-1 lead by beating out an infield single that Todd scored on.

However, the lead wouldn't be enough as Bethel scored three runs in the fifth inning, two of which came unearned courtesy of an error by Makenzie Hawkins.

The Blazers were held scoreless in the fifth, sixth and seventh and Jordan Herring was dealt with the hard-luck loss.

Herring pitched six innings, allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits, while striking out two.

In game two, Belhaven jumped out to a big lead in the bottom of the first with a six run inning.

After a leadoff double by Josie Porter to begin Belhaven's game offensively, Hitt had an RBI single to give Belhaven the lead.

After Belhaven loaded the bases, Tori Sorrell reached on an error that allowed Hitt to score.

Cary Yasses and Haley Yasses then followed it up with back-to-back RBI hits. Carly's double scored Corona and Todd, while Haley's single allowed Sorrell to score.

As the lineup batted around in the inning, Porter added an RBI single for the final run of the inning.

In the second, Sorrell picked up an RBI double down the left field line to score Corona for run number seven of the game.

After scoreless third and fourth innings, Bethel plated their only run on an error on an attempted stolen base.

The Blazers answered in the bottom half with two runs to end the game via a run-rule walk off. Taylor O'Dell gave Belhaven an 8-1 lead with an RBI double to left center to score Crystal Kehtel.

Stacey Luciani then plated the final run of the game beating out a throw home on a ball hit to second by Hitt.

Julienne Broussard picked up the win, pitching four innings, allowing just one hit and no runs, while recording three strikeouts.

Sarah Beth Harbour pitched the fifth inning for the Blazers, allowing one run three hits with one strikeout.

The Blazers will have a day off before hosting Martin Methodist on Senior Day on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at McLeod Field.
