JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Blazers celebrated senior day at McLeod with a pair of wins in a Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader against Martin Methodist. The Blazers came from behind to win 7-5 in game one, before winning 4-1 in the second game.
The Blazers started behind after a three-run homerun capped a four run first for Martin Methodist to begin the day. The Red Hawks would go on to add a fifth run in the third inning, putting the Blazers in a big hole.
Senior
Ashlee Hitt got things going for the Blazers in the game one comeback with an RBI single in the fourth inning that scored fellow senior
Josie Porter to get Belhaven on the scoreboard.
Emily Todd, another one of seven seniors honored before the game, followed Hitt with a single down the left field line to score
Dani Craft to cut the deficit to 5-2.
In the fifth inning, senior Tori Sorrell reached base and then
Haley Yasses hit a two-run homerun to left field, cutting the Blazers deficit to just one after five innings.
It wouldn't take long for the Blazers to grab the lead, as Todd and Craft reached base in the sixth inning and another Blazers senior,
Dominique Corona, followed it up with a three-run homerun down the left field line to give Belhaven the lead.
Julienne Broussard came on in relief of starter
Jordan Herring in the seventh inning and picked up her first save of the season.
In game two, it was Belhaven who would produce a four-run first inning and the Blazers never looked back.
Todd started the scoring with a two-RBI triple down the right field line that scored Craft and Hitt.
Corona then scored Todd in the next at bat with a base hit to right center.
Carly Yasses would round out the scoring for the Blazers in the first with a single to left center that scored Sorrell for the fourth run of the inning.
Broussard would pitch all seven innings, allowing just one run in the fifth inning. The sophomore allowed just five hits while striking out four on the day,
