Hitt, Broussard lead Blazers to sweep of Blue Mountain

NEW ALBANY, Miss. – The Belhaven Blazers picked up a doubleheader sweep over Blue Mountain College Thursday afternoon with wins of 10-4 and 1-0.

Ashlee Hitt had the two big swings for the Blazers, hitting a three-run homerun in game one to blow the lead open and then had a solo shot in game two for the only run of the game.

Belhaven loaded the bases in the first inning of game one with no outs, but were only able to score one run on a fielder's choice ball that got a runner out at home but allowed Dominique Corona to score after the double play attempted throw by the catcher ended up in right field.

In the second inning, Corona extended the lead with a RBI single to right that scored Mary Austin Barber. Then, with Corona and Josie Porter on base, Hitt sent her first homerun over the fence for a three-run shot that gave Belhaven a 5-0 lead.

Blue Mountain scored in the bottom of the second with a solo homerun to cut the deficit to 5-1.

In the fourth, back-to-back doubles by Corona and Hitt added another Blazers run as Corona scored on Hitt's ball to right center.

The Toppers added a run in the bottom half via a sacrifice fly to make it 6-2, but Belhaven would go on to add two in the fifth and two in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 10-2.

Makenzie Hawkins doubled to right center, scoring Haley Yasses in the fifth. Corona then had another RBI single to score Hawkins later in the inning.

In the sixth, Yasses singled to left, scoring Dani Craft, after she started a string a four consecutive singles.

Later in the inning, Stacey Luciani scored on a fielding error in left field.

Jordan Herring picked up the win in game one, pitching four innings, allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out two.

Sara Beth Harbour pitched the final three innings, allowing a run in the sixth and one in the seventh on four total hits and a walk. Harbour also had a strikeout.

In game two, Hitt had a two-out solo homerun in the top of the first. That would be all that Julienne Broussard would need as she tossed a two-hit shutout for the win.

Broussard picked up eight strikeouts in the game, and allowed just three walks. Her second strikeout of the game was strikeout 100 for the season.

The Blazers will return to action on Saturday with another doubleheader against Blue Mountain, this time scheduled for 1 p.m. at McLeod Field in Jackson.
