Softball sweeps Blue Mountain for sixth straight win

JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Blazers picked up their sixth straight victory on Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep over Blue Mountain. Belhaven defeated the Toppers 4-0 and 7-0 to complete the season sweep of the SSAC West rival.

Belhaven upped its defensive scoreless streak to 21 straight innings with a pair of shutout victories over Blue Mountain in the home finale for the Blazers.

Jordan Herring threw a two hitter in game number one and Julienne Broussard and Sarah Beth Harbour combined for a four-hit shutout in game two at McLeod Field.

Herring was supported by four runs in the game, the first coming from an RBI single by Haley Yasses in the second inning that scored Danielle Bacon.

Josie Porter and Makenzie Hawkins then had RBI doubles in the fourth inning to add two more runs before Dani Craft had an RBI single in the sixth inning that scored Kelly Rogers for the final run of the first game.

In game two, the Blazers took the lead in the first when Josie Porter scored on a ball four wild pitch to Ashlee Hitt. Hitt would eventually come around to score the second run of the inning after the bases were loaded and another wild pitch allowed all three base runners to advance.

In the fourth inning, Carly Yasses and Makenzie Hawkins hit back-to-back homeruns to left center to put the Blazers up by four.

Belhaven would go on to add three more runs in the fifth inning, with the first coming from a Crystal Kehtel RBI double that scored Stacey Luciani.

Kehtel then scored on a two-run homerun by Victoria Sorrell, which was also to left centerfield.

Broussard threw the first six innings of game two, recording 11 strikeouts with just four hits and two walks against. Harbour pitched a one-two-three seventh inning.

The Blazers will now hit the road for the remainder of the season. Belhaven will travel to William Carey for a doubleheader on Saturday in the second-to-last date of the regular season.
