HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Belhaven Blazers Softball team earned a split with No. 9 William Carey on Saturday, falling 4-1 in game one before winning 2-1 in extra innings in game two.
Belhaven fell behind in game one early, as William Carey scored a run in the first to go ahead.
After the Blazers stranded the bases loaded in the third, the Crusaders added another run to go up 2-0.
Carey would go on to add two more runs in the fifth inning, taking a 4-0 lead.
The Blazers would score their only run in the sixth inning with an RBI single to left field by
Dani Craft.
Stacey Luciani, who pinch ran for
Emily Todd after a single, stole second and then score on the base hit by Craft.
In game two, a pitching dual dominated the first several innings.
William Carey would strike first, scoring in the first run of the game in the fifth inning to go up 1-0.
The Blazers would answer back in the sixth inning. Tori Sorrell led off the inning with a pinch-hit single.
Josie Porter followed with another single.
After an out,
Ashlee Hitt singled to right field. Initially, Sorrell stopped at third, but when the throw in from right field got away from the catcher, Sorrell was able to get home from third and tie the game.
After a scoreless seventh inning,
Haley Yasses led off the eighth inning with a single to center field.
Mary Austin Barber then pinch ran for Yasses.
Luciani followed up with a single back up the middle to put runners on first and second.
Porter executed a sacrifice bunt to near perfection and
Dominique Corona followed it up with a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Barber to score the go-ahead run.
Sarah Beth Harbour, who pitched the seventh inning, closed out the eighth with another 1-2-3 inning, to give the Blazers the win.
The Blazers are scheduled to wrap up the regular season on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Mobile. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
