GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Belhaven Blazers advanced to the winner's bracket second round of the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday with a 4-3 victory over the Faulkner Eagles.
Belhaven had to come from behind in the opening round game, but did so with all four of the runs coming with two outs in the game.
Ashlee Hitt gave the Blazers the lead in the bottom of the first with a solo homerun to left field. It was the SSAC Player of the Year's 13th homerun of the season.
However, the Blazers lead didn't last long as Faulkner answered back with a three-run homerun in the top of the second inning. Holli Brooks hit one of the few mistakes from
Jordan Herring to right center.
Herring tossed all seven innings for the Blazers, allowing just five hits and the walk. Herring had four strikeouts in the game, earning her 11th win of the season.
In the fourth inning, Belhaven would get a run back to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Emily Todd started the inning with a double to right center. After moving to third on a sacrifice bunt, Todd scored on a two-out single by
Carly Yasses to left field.
Todd finished with a 3-for-3 day at the plate, scoring a run while also knocking in the tying and go-ahead runs.
In the fifth inning, Belhaven took the lead with a two-run double to center by Todd, scoring
Makenzie Hawkins and
Dominique Corona, who reached on a hit and a walk, respectively.
Belhaven will advance to the winner's bracket and will face the winner of Auburn-Montgomery and Brewton-Parker later today. The Blazers split the season series (1-1) with both of the teams.
