GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Belhaven Blazers softball team advanced on in the winner's bracket on Friday with an 8-3 victory over Brewton-Parker to stay undefeated at the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament.
Belhaven used the long ball to blow open a big lead early and carried on to advance to the winner's bracket final later on Friday.
Emily Todd started the long ball display for the Blazers, hitting the first of four home runs in the game for the Green and Gold. Todd's homerun was a three-run shot in the bottom of the first that gave Belhaven a lead it never relinquished.
Josie Porter and
Ashlee Hitt were on base for Todd's fifth homerun of the season.
Todd was 2-for-3 in the game and also had a walk, while Hitt would go 2-for-3 with a walk as well.
Victoria Sorrell added to the first inning run total for the Blazers, hitting a towering homerun to put Belhaven up 4-0 after the first. It was Sorrell's fourth of the season.
Sorrell finished the game 1-for-3.
Immediately after
Stacey Luciani led off with a single to begin the second inning, Porter hit her second homerun of the season and the third homerun of the day for Belhaven. Belhaven would carry the 6-0 lead into the fifth inning.
Porter would finish the game 3-for-4 with the two RBIs and three runs scored.
Luciani was 1-for-3 and had a stolen base.
After Brewton-Parker scored an unearned run in the fifth to cut it to 6-1,
Makenzie Hawkins opened it back up with the fourth homerun of the game, a solo shot to left to put Belhaven back in front by six runs.
Hawkins would then add an RBI single to her day, scoring Porter to put Belhaven up 8-1 in the bottom of the sixth. Hawkins finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
The Barons would go on to add two runs in the seventh, but Belhaven moved on with the win.
Jordan Herring tossed the first six innings, scattering four hits and allowing just one unearned run. Herring improved to 12-9 on the season.
Carly Yasses also had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4.
The Blazers will meet the winner of Mobile and William Carey in the Winner's Bracket final at approximately 6 p.m.
