Belhaven falls to Mississippi College in doubleheader

CLINTON, Miss. – The Belhaven Blazers Softball team dropped its doubleheader to Mississippi College on Wednesday, falling 2-0 and 7-1 to the crosstown rival.

The Blazers were only able to get three hits in game one, struggling to move base runners into scoring position.

Belhaven also had two errors in the game, one in the first and one in the second, and both proved costly as they led to two unearned runs, the only runs of the game.

In the first inning, a runner scored from second on a fielding error. Then, with the bases loaded in the second and two outs, the Choctaws added their second run with another fielding error.

Dominique Corona, Ashlee Hitt and Emily Todd had the base hits for the Blazers in game one.

In game two, Mississippi College jumped out on top early with a five-run inning that was extended with three Choctaws hits, a hit batter, a walk and another Blazers error.

Danielle Bacon would get the only run of the day for the Blazers in the fifth inning, hitting a homerun to left field. It was her second homerun of the season.

The Blazers finished with four hits total in game two. Hitt had a pair of singles and finished with three hits on the day. Makenzie Hawkins had the other base hit in game two.

Jordan Herring pitched in relief in both games, totaling six innings. She only gave up three hits and one unearned run.

Belhaven would look to bounce back on Friday in its doubleheader vs Auburn-Montgomery. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at McLeod Field.
