JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Blazers picked up a doubleheader split on Friday with No. 2 Auburn-Montgomery, recovering from a game one defeat to win 3-2 in 11th inning, walk-off fashion.
After keeping the Warhawks off the scoreboard in the first extra inning, Belhaven gave up the lead with a run allowed in the ninth to Auburn-Montgomery.
However, Belhaven answered as Tori Sorrell hit a monster homerun to left center to tie the game at 2 and send it to the 10th inning and international tie-breaker rules.
Both teams failed to score in the 10th, but Belhaven also held Auburn-Montgomery scoreless again in the 11th. After a sacrifice bunt put the winning run on third,
Carly Yasses gave the Blazers the walk off victory, putting the ball out of the reach of the AUM defense down the left field line.
The win moves Belhaven back to .500 on the season and is also the Blazers second win over a team ranked No. 2 in the nation. Belhaven also beat No. 2 William Carey on a walk off in February.
Belhaven took the lead in the third inning of game two, putting together a two-out rally that was started by
Dani Craft's double off the top of the centerfield fence. After a walk by
Ashlee Hitt,
Dominique Corona gave the Blazers the lead with a double to the gap in left center.
Auburn-Montgomery answered with a RBI triple in the fourth inning to tie the game.
In game one, the Warhawks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Belhaven had a chance to answer, but stranded a pair of base runners in the bottom half of the inning.
Auburn-Montgomery capitalized and scored seven runs in the next inning before adding four more runs in the top of the third.
In the bottom of the third, Belhaven recorded its only two runs of the game with a two-run homerun by Hitt, which also scored
Makenzie Hawkins who had reached earlier in the inning.
AUM would respond with a two-run homerun of its own in the fourth and another run in the fifth to win 15-2.
Belhaven will return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader against Faulkner University. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
