JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven baseball team split a doubleheader with Middle Georgia Stat College on Saturday, taking the opener 8-6 before falling 7-6 in the 13-inning nightcap. The Blazers' record now stands at 16-10 overall, including a 5-7 mark in Southern States Athletic Conference play.
"It was nice to get the win, but we are more than disappointed with the way today turned out," Head Coach
Hill Denson said. "We had chances to sweep today, and we couldn't take advantage of them."
Chase Davidson (2-0) picked up Belhaven's only win of the series on the mound, pitching five innings in Saturday's first game.
David Hill and
Zach Osha each tossed a scoreless inning, while the latter recorded his third save in as many opportunities.
Offensively, four Blazers sparked two base hits apiece, while
Hunter Sutton drove in a team-high three runs. Belhaven's offense combined 11 hits with a pair walks to score eight runs, which proved to be enough to earn their 16th win of the season.
Starter Jake Hundley (0-4) took the loss for the Knights, allowing six runs over the game's first five innings. Zach Massengale provided little relief in his 1.1 innings before Tanner Snellgrove recorded the final five outs.
After a double and a home run, third baseman Sam Ayers drove in three runs for Middle Georgia to highlight the offensive effort. Clint Wynn went 1-for-2 at the plate, scoring two runs and drawing a pair of walks.
The nightcap was a back and forth game for the better part of 13 innings, but the Knights were able to come away with the win in the series finale. The 2-1 series win gave Middle Georgia their first in the SSAC, while the Blazers dropped to 2-2 in league series this season.
Second baseman Donovan Campbell paced the Knight lineup, lining three base hits and plating a run. Rightfielder Tristan Goodro added two hits and two RBI, with shortstop Dalton DeLay scoring the game-winner.
Osha (2-4) took the loss as the third Blazer to toe the rubber after a short outing from
Will Cockrell and a productive one from
Tanner Moulder. Holden Carruth (1-0) picked up the win after delivering six innings and surrendering just one run.
Adam Kowalczyk and
Gabe Wilson each had two RBI, while
Will Mullen's three singles extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
Emilio DeSilva added two hits of his own and drew two of the six Belhaven walks.
The Blazers return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to East Texas to take on Texas College. First pitch from Longview is slated for 1:00 pm, with live stats and audio available on the Blazers Digital Network.
