JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Blazers Softball team dropped a Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader to the University of Mobile on Tuesday, falling 5-2 and 13-9.
The Blazers held the lead early in game one after
Josie Porter's first homerun of the season gave Belhaven the lead in the third inning.
Belhaven extended the lead in the fifth inning when
Emily Todd hit an RBI double down the left line that scored Porter.
However, Mobile answered back with a two-run homerun in the sixth inning to tie up the game at 2-2.
After a scoreless sixth for Belhaven, Mobile would go on to add three more runs in the top of the seventh to secure a 5-2 victory in game one.
In game two, it was Mobile who struck first, but the Blazers answered back with six runs in the bottom of the first and second inning to go up 6-1.
In the bottom of the first,
Ashlee Hitt put Belhaven on the scoreboard with a double down the left field line to score
Dani Craft.
After Hitt was pinch run for by
Kelly Rogers,
Dominique Corona gave the Blazers the lead with another double.
Danielle Bacon then followed it up with an RBI single to score
Emily Todd.
In the second inning, Todd drew a bases loaded walk to start the scoring for the Blazers. The Corona followed it up with a two-RBI single to center that scored Craft and Hitt and put the Blazers up by five.
Mobile would then answer with two runs in the third, followed by three runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and lastly, four runs in the sixth to give Mobile a 13-6 lead. A large part of the big innings for the Rams came at the aid of eight Belhaven errors defensively.
Todd would have a RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning that scored Porter, but that was all that the Blazers could score in the inning, leaving two on base.
In the seventh inning, Belhaven would add two more runs via a
Carly Yasses homerun, but fell short of a late rally.
Belhaven finished with 18 hits over the two games, but also finished with nine errors total in 14 innings.
The Blazers will return to action on Wednesday with a trip to crosstown rival Mississippi College. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Clinton.
