JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Blazers Softball team defeated Rust College Wednesday afternoon in a pair of run-rule victories in the doubleheader.
The Blazers jumped out to a 13-0 lead in game one and cruised to win 15-6 in the game.
Ashlee Hitt led the way in the game with a 3-for-3 day at the plate, including a pair of home runs. The first home run came in the first with a three-run shot to give the Blazers in the lead.
In the third inning, Belhaven plated nine runs and that was also fueled by a lead off homerun by Hitt. Later in the inning, Hitt added the eight run of the inning with an RBI single.
Haley Yasses and
Carly Yasses followed up Hitt's run in the third with RBI hits of their own.
Carly Yasses had a two-run single that scored
Mary Austin Barber and
Haley Yasses.
Barber batted in the middle of the twins and also had an RBI single.
Makenzie Hawkins and
Danielle Bacon also had RBI singles in the big inning for the Blazers.
After a five-run inning in the top of the fourth by Rust,
Jordan Herring had an RBI triple and
Meg Garton also had an RBI double in the inning to score Herring, plating the final runs of the inning.
Sarah Beth Harbour picked up the win for the Blazers, pitching the first three innings before coming back to finish the final four outs. Harbour allowed just one run, unearned, on one hit while striking out three batters.
In game two, the Blazers plated two runs in the first and never looked back. Bacon had a RBI double and then
Crystal Kehtel followed it up with a RBI single to score Bacon for the first two runs.
After a scoreless second, Garton scored Bacon on a squeeze play attempt as the bunt carried down the third base line.
Barber then had a sacrifice fly later in the inning to score Kehtel and give the Blazers a 4-0 lead after three.
In the fourth inning, Hitt had her third homerun of the day with a solo shot that put the Blazers up 5-0.
In the fifth, the Blazers had back-to-back-to-back bases loaded singles from
Victoria Sorrell,
Dani Craft and Hitt to give the Blazers a walk off by run rule victory.
Herring and Julianne Broussard each pitched two scoreless innings, while
Dominique Corona pitched a scoreless fifth inning in the 8-0 win for the Blazers.
Belhaven will have a travel day off Thursday before taking on Coastal Georgia in a SSAC doubleheader on Friday in Brunwick, Ga.
