JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Baseball team split the opening day of its SSAC series with Brewton Parker on Friday, winning the first game before falling in the nightcap.
In game one, the Blazers used a two run third inning to push past the Barons 2-1 in seven innings.
Reagan Rutledge gave the Blazers the lead in the inning with a sac fly after
James Peterson had a leadoff triple.
Paul Pickerrell then added the eventual winning run with an RBI base hit to score
Emilio DeSilva.
The Barons had a chance to tie the game or take the lead in the sixth inning, but
David Hill relieved starter
Ben Allison and got out of a bases loaded, 1-out jam, allowing just one run via a sacrifice fly.
Hill gave up the sacrifice fly and then got out of the inning with a strikeout.
Zach Osha would come out in the seventh to pitch a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts to record his sixth save of the season.
Allison picked up the win, pitching 5.1 innings, scattering eight hits and four walks, while allowing just the one run. Allison, who improves to 5-2 on the year, had three strikeouts.
In game two, the Blazers took the lead in the second inning.
Will Mullen started the inning with a triple and then Peterson doubled Mullen home for the opening run.
Peterson would then get to third, but the Blazers could not add any more runs.
In the fifth inning, Brewton Parker took control of the game with a five-run inning that was capped off with a three-run home run.
The first run came on a throwing error after an attempt to catch a stolen base attempt with runner's on the corners, knotting the game up at one.
Mike Parker then hit a home run to right field later in the inning to give the Barons a 4-1 lead.
The final run of the inning came on a wild pitch.
It wouldn't be the only time the Barons scored that way, as they added another run in the seventh via a bases loaded wild pitch before the Blazers got out of the jam without another run allowed in the inning.
Brewton Parker would go on to add more runs in the eighth. After loading the bases, the Barons added runs on three straight at bats, via a pair of singles on both ends of a sacrifice fly.
Belhaven would add a run in the eighth inning on a Pickerrell RBI ground out that scored
Reagan Rutledge. However, the Blazers would go in order in the ninth, falling in the game 9-2.
Chase Davidson (3-1) picked up his first loss of the season, giving up four runs in 4.1 innings.
The Blazers and Barons will decide the series in the rubber match on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Smith-Wills Stadium.
