JACKSON, Miss. – The Blazers baseball team suffered their second loss of the season on Monday, falling 4-3 to St. Catharine College at Smith-Wills Stadium. Belhaven posted their lowest run total of the year, dropping to 6-2 through the season's first eight games.
"They beat us at our own game tonight, and they deserve a lot of credit," Head Coach
Hill Denson said. "We have to put this behind us and find a way to regroup before our next game."
First baseman
Adam Kowalczyk contributed two of the four Belhaven hits, while
Paul Pickerrell and
James Peterson each added a single. No Blazer player was credited with an RBI, and the team failed to successfully swipe a bag for the second consecutive outing.
Zach Osha was the final of six Belhaven arms to toe the rubber, surrendering a run in the ninth to get saddled with the loss. The right hander tossed the final two innings, striking out four and walking just one along the way.
For St. Catharine, leadoff man Alfredo Bohorquez paced the lineup with a single and a triple at the plate. The second baseman drove in a run and scored a run of his own at the top of the Patriot order, while leftfielder Santiago Arce found two hits, as well.
The Patriots hurled a different pitcher in every inning, but after the team took the lead in the top of the ninth inning, Tyler Jones became eligible for his first win of the year. Jake McCoy held on in the bottom half to convert his first save, helping St. Catharine improve to 2-3 on the season.
The Blazers return to action on Wednesday, when they host crosstown rival Tougaloo College at Smith-Wills Stadium at 4:00 pm. In their only previous meeting this season, Belhaven defeated the Bulldogs by a convincing 16-2 tally in a game shortened by a ten-run mercy rule.
