JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven baseball team improved to 7-2 on the season with Wednesday's 14-4 victory Tougaloo College at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Blazers have mercy ruled the Bulldogs in each of their first two meetings this year, with two more contests slated for a later part of the schedule.
"After a loss on Monday, we wanted to come out with a different mentality today," Head Coach
Hill Denson said. "Our guys were able to hit the ball well tonight, and we're satisfied with the win."
Will Cockrell picked up the win in relief, delivering a perfect fifth inning as one of nine Belhaven arms to toe the rubber. Tougaloo scored four times in the fourth frame but never managed to get within a run of the Blazers' lead.
Offensively,
Devin McCann paced the Blazers, launching his first home run and adding two singles to total a game-high four RBI.
Paul Pickerrell crossed the plate three times, while
Hamilton Harper contributed two hits and three RBI of his own.
Tougaloo starter Lige Mims lasted only four innings, surpassing 100 pitches in his season debut on the mound. The right hander surrendered nine runs on nine hits while walking three before his bullpen allowed just one earned run over the next 4.2 innings.
Belhaven opens the Southern States Athletic Conference portion of their schedule on Friday, when they will hit the road to take on the Blue Mountain Toppers. First pitch of the three-game series is slated for 4:00 pm.
"We play in a conference where anyone can beat anyone, and we want to start on the right foot," Denson said. "We are always looking for a sweep because each game is important."
