COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Belhaven Blazers opened up the 2015 NFCA Leadoff Classic with a pair of wins on Friday, defeating Corban University 9-0 and William Woods 3-1.
Belhaven's offense jumped out to a hot start in the early game, as
Emily Todd put the Blazers up 2-0 with a two-run double to right center.
In the next inning, the Blazers put together a two-out rally, scoring four runs to open up the game.
Dani Craft started a run of five straight Blazers to reach base, four of which came with a hit.
Craft singled to score
Stacey Luciani from third. After a walk by
Ashlee Hitt, Todd added her third RBI of the game with another single.
Then
Makenzie Hawkins singled to score Hitt and
Victoria Sorrell followed with a double to score Todd, the final run of the inning for the Blazers.
In the third inning, the Blazers capitalized on Corban errors to score three more runs. Craft singled to center, scoring Luciani, and then after a misplayed ball in center,
Josie Porter scored from third.
Craft then scored the final run of game on a throwing error by the pitcher.
Julienne Broussard picked up her first shutout of the year in the game, scattering five hits and two walks over five innings. The sophomore found herself in only one jam up in the game, but was able to strand the bases loaded in the top of the first.
In game two, the Blazers found themselves in a pitching duel between
Jordan Herring and Allison Waskow.
The two teams combined for 10 total hits in the seven innings.
William Woods struck first, capitalizing on one of the few mistakes by Herring. Caroline Sicht hit the first of three homeruns in the game with a shot to center field in the bottom of the second inning.
Carly Yasses answered back in the top of the third with a homerun to left. It was her second homerun of the season.
After two scoreless innings, Porter led off the top of the sixth with a Todd gave the Blazers the lead again, this time with a two-run homerun to straight away center field.
Herring completed the remainder of the game with the run support to pick up her fourth win of the season. She finished with four hits allowed and just the one run, while striking out five Owls batters.
Belhaven will now set its sights on Ave Maria, for the final game of pool play. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. et.
