JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven baseball team battled icy temperatures and defeated Tougaloo College 10-0 on Tuesday afternoon to improve to 11-7 on the year. Senior right hander
Joey Harris made his collegiate debut on the mound and delivered by tossing the team's first no-hitter in more than a decade.
"I haven't pitched since high school, but I felt myself getting into a groove," Harris said. "I really just wanted to throw the ball over the plate."
The Gulfport, Mississippi native gave the Blazers their first complete game and their first shutout of the 2015 campaign. Harris walked two Bulldogs and fanned six while throwing 94 pitches, including 61 for strikes.
"We've been trying to find a spot to throw him, and today he made us look bad for not pitching him yet," Pitching Coach
Josh Clarke said. "We like the intensity Joey brings, and he has definitely earned himself another start."
The Blazers scored two runs in each of five consecutive innings after a scoreless first. Belhaven's offense combined seven hits, ten walks, and eight stolen bases to give Harris more than enough run support to become the seventh pitcher to record a win.
Adam Kowalczyk waited until his third at bat to extend his hitting streak to 18 games, but he did so successfully with a 2-RBI single up the middle.
Paul Pickerrell and
Dane Gecina each drew a pair of walks in the victory.
The Bulldogs dropped to 3-10 on the year, including an 0-3 mark against the 14th-ranked Blazers. Belhaven has outscored Tougaloo 40-6 in head-to-head contest, with one final meeting slated for March 18th.
The Blazers return to action this weekend, when they will travel to New Orleans to take on Loyola in Southern States Athletic Conference play. Friday's first pitch is slated for 6:00 pm.
