Baseball swept in SSAC doubleheader by Rams

JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven baseball team suffered back-to-back losses for the first time of the season on Friday, dropping two Southern States Athletic Conference contests to the University of Mobile. The Blazers fell 4-2 in the opener before the Rams' offense erupted for a 13-4 win in the nightcap.

Mobile starting pitcher Tucker Ward held the Blazers in check for 6.2 innings, scattering eight hits and surrendering just two runs. Trey Cockrell picked up the final out and earned his third save of the season in the process for the Rams.

Offensively, the Rams were led by first baseman Braxton Hamil, who contributed four base hits, two RBI, and two runs scored. In the seventh inning, Hamil became the third Mobile player of the season to hit his first home run, sending one over Smith-Wills Stadium's right field wall.

Adam Kowalczyk and Joey Harris combined for half of the Belhaven hits, while Harris and Reagan Rutledge were credited with game's only runs batted in. Ben Allison took the loss for the home nine after allowing two earned runs through 4.1 innings of work.

The Blazers took a 2-0 lead over their guests in the second inning of the nightcap, but the Mobile offense came to life over the next three innings. The Rams offensive effort was aided by a six-run top of the fourth, lifting them to an 11-4 overall record.

Ace Corey Hale picked up his fourth win of the series after Belhaven ended his streak of more than 20 innings without surrendering an earned run. Troy Andrews tossed the final three frames for the Rams to record his first save of the year.

Mobile totaled 12 hits and drew seven walks as a team, with third baseman Dakota Spikes contributing a three-hit ballgame to lead the charge. Designated hitter Payne Palmer drove in four runs, while Norberto Torres plated two.

DeSilva and Kowalczyk finished as the only Blazers with a multi-hit game, with the latter extending his hit streak to 16 with a solo home run in the fifth. Belhaven used ten pitchers in their third conference loss, and senior southpaw Chris Good was saddled with his first loss.

The defense didn't help the Blazers, as they were charged with six errors in Game Two to total eight on the day. Belhaven dropped to 10-6 on the campaign, including a 2-3 mark in the Southern States Athletic Conference.

Belhaven and Mobile are set to play the finale of the three-game series on Saturday at Smith-Wills Stadium. First pitch is slated for 1:00 pm.
