JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven women's basketball team suffered their fifth loss in six games on Thursday night, falling 56-53 against William Carey. With the setback, the Blazers drop to 14-12 overall and 7-8 in Southern States Athletic Conference play.
The Blazers drew up a play with a chance to tie the game at the final horn, but the highly-contested shot was off the mark. The Lady Crusaders were able to salvage a regular season split against their SSAC Western Division rival and improve to 10-12 on the year.
Ariel Wilson finished with her season average of 20 points to lead the Blazers, while
TaShayla Steede was the only other player in double figures for the home team. The duo also combined for 15 of the team's 34 rebounds, but William Carey outrebounded their hosts 46-34.
Keoshya Wilson connected on 8-of-17 from the floor for the Lady Crusaders to finish with 22 points, good enough for a game high. Fredrikah Wilson chipped in 11 points, while Tiffany Sims hauled in a game-best ten rebounds.
The Blazers outshot their rivals 39% to 33% from the floor, but the Green and Gold connected on only two of their 12 shots from behind the arc. Belhaven shot 58% from the charity stripe, while their counterparts connected on almost 62% of their free throws.
Belhaven returns to action on Saturday, when they travel to Mobile to take on the Lady Rams at 2:00 pm. The final home game for the Blazers comes on Thursday, February 26, when they will celebrate their annual Senior Night.
