MOBILE, Ala. – The Belhaven Women's Basketball team fell to Mobile 58-46 Saturday afternoon in Southern States Athletic Conference play.
The Blazers led early on as
Sierra Pittman and
Ariel Wilson traded baskets over the first couple of minutes to put Belhaven up by as many as five. However, Mobile was able to stay close and early and then take the lead, which they held for much of the remainder of the first 20 minutes.
Pittman gave the Blazers an 18-16 lead with six minutes to go in the half, part of her nine first half points.
Mobile answered late in the half though to go up 23-19, but Belhaven managed to add five points in the final 26 seconds to take a 24-23 lead into the break.
Wilson, who had 11 points in the first half, hit a three at the 26-second mark and then Pittman converted a Rams turnover into two more points and a Belhaven lead at the buzzer.
Mobile opened up the second half on a 12-4 run, pulling ahead of the Blazers by seven points with just under 15 minutes remaining.
However,
Jacinda Smith (6),
Kenya Wright (4), and
TaShayla Steede (4) combined for 14 of the next 21 points in the game to give Belhaven a 42-41 lead with just under eight minutes remaining.
Smith then added four more points over the next four minutes as Belhaven maintained a slim advantage over Mobile with a 46-44 lead and 3:55 remaining.
The small lead would not be enough as Mobile then scored the last 14 points, pulling away from the Blazers.
Belhaven shot 35 percent (18-51) in the game, slightly better than Mobile's 33 percent (18-54), but the Blazers were outrebounded 43-36 and had less free throw attempts (15) than the Rams had made free throws (19).
Wilson (11) and Pittman (9) both finished without a point in the second half. Smith, who didn't have a point in the first half, finished with 10 in the game.
Belhaven will return home for its home finale and senior night against Blue Mountain on Thursday. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m. in Rugg Arena.
