Box Score 3 FORT WORTH, Texas – The Belhaven Blazers softball team opened up the 2015 season Friday with a triple-header of games in the Cowtown Classic. Belhaven defeated Doane in the opener, but dropped contests to No. 18 Houston-Victoria and Texas Wesleyan.
In game one, the Blazers jumped out to an early lead as
Victoria Sorrell doubled and then game around to score the opening run of the season when
Dominique Corona singled later in the inning.
Belhaven had a couple base runners in the second and third innings, but were unable to score and Doane eventually answered back with a tying run in the bottom of the third that was added by a defensive error for the Blazers.
Doane then took the lead in the fourth inning after a home run, but it was all that freshman pitcher
Jordan Herring would allow in her first collegiate outing. Herring finished with two runs given up, one earned, and five hits allowed over a full seven innings of work.
In the sixth inning, the Blazers started their come from behind victory with an
Ashlee Hitt single to start the inning. After
Mary Austin Barber pinch ran for Hitt, Corona bunted for a single, advancing Barber to third.
Emily Todd then hit an RBI double to score Barber and put Blazers at second and third with no outs. After an out,
Danielle Bacon singled to score Corona and put the Blazers up for good, while setting runners on the corners.
Following another out,
Stacey Luciani hit a two-run double to give the Blazers extra insurance with a 5-2 lead.
Herring would retire Doane in the sixth and the seventh to give the Blazers the season opening win.
In game two against Houston-Victoria, the offense was limited for both ranked squads.
The Blazers were able to plate a run in the fourth inning as
Makenzie Hawkins singled to score
Dani Craft from second base.
However, Houston-Victoria answered with a three-run home run in the fifth inning after a pair of errors prolonged the inning for pitcher
Julienne Broussard.
The sophomore transfer from LSU-Eunice struck out 11 batters in the game and did not give up an earned run in the losing effort.
Neither team threatened in the remainder of the contest, as UHV handed Belhaven its first loss of the season.
In the third and final game of day one, Belhaven jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first, plating two runs.
Hitt provided the offense for the Blazers in the inning, hitting a two run homerun for Belhaven's only runs of the game.
Josie Porter scored on the play after leading the game off with a walk.
Texas Wesleyan answered back in the bottom half of the first with a run, albeit unearned. After the lead off reached on a fielding error, she came around to score three batters later.
Sarah Beth Harbour was able to pitch her way out of the jam, in the first, but gave up another run in the second after giving up three hits. The Blazers were able to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the second without any more damage.
Belhaven was unable to generate another hit in the game and that proved costly, as Texas Wesleyan was able to plate the third and final run of the game on a wild pitch in the fourth inning.
The Blazers will return to action on Saturday with three more contests to wrap up the Cowtown Classic.
