Blazers fall in home opener to UMHB

JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Women's Basketball team fell to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor 57-72 on Thursday night in the Blazers' home and ASC conference openers.
 
Belhaven fell behind by as much as 10 in the first half, but closed the gap to tie the score with 3:38 remaining in the 2nd quarter. The Blazers then grabbed a one-point lead when Jasmine Brown hit two free throws with 5:02 left in the third quarter.
 
However, the Crusaders would quickly grab the lead back and pulled away from the Blazers. Belhaven found itself in foul trouble in the fourth, as Mary Hardin-Baylor pulled away late to hand the hosts their third loss of the season.
 
Candler Gregory followed up a career high in her last outing with 14 points to lead the Green-and-Gold in the game. Gregory has led the Blazers in scoring in all three games this season.
 
Gregory also finished with six rebounds, and an assist, while hitting two three pointers and going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.
 
Ieshia Dixon (13) and Sierra Pittman (10) were also in double figures for the Blazers on the night.
 
Dixon also had six rebounds and finished the contest with four of Belhaven's seven blocks.
 
Jasmine Brown and Vamikka Smith led Belhaven with seven rebounds each. The duo also finished with six points and Brown led the Blazers with three steals.
 
In total, nine Blazers were on the scoresheet for Belhaven, who finished the contest shooting just 30.4 percent from the field, despite going 46.2 percent from behind the arc.
 
The Blazers will return to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. tip against Concordia University Texas in Rugg Arena.
