BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Belhaven Blazers fell to Birmingham-Southern College on Tuesday night 50-59 in non-conference action.
The hosts jumped out to a 14-3 lead after 10 minutes at Bill Battle Coliseum and the Blazers could never fully recover, despite a comeback bid that brought the Green and Gold to within one point with 3:15 remaining.
However, the Panthers remained undefeated with a 10-2 run, including eight free throws, over the final three minutes to hold off the Blazers and snap Belhaven's win streak.
Sierra Pittman led the Blazers after continuing her strong run of scoring this season with her sixth double-digit game of the season. The junior would reach a new career level though, setting a career high with 18 points in the game.
Pittman also had six assists in the game to go along with five rebounds and three steals in an all-around performance.
Candler Gregory was the only other Blazer in double digits, scoring 13 points, including a trio of three pointers. Gregory has had at least one three pointer in each of the seven games this season, and like Pittman, has been in double figures six times this season.
Gregory also recorded seven rebounds to lead the Blazers in the contest and finished with two of the Belhaven's four blocks in the game.
Tamora Shelton had the other two blocks, along with five rebounds and six points.
The Blazers finished the night 21-of-52 (.404), outshooting Birmingham-Southern (.328) in the contest. However, the Blazers turned the ball over 23 times, leading to 18 Panthers' points in the game.
Belhaven will return to action on Friday with the first day of the Oglethorpe Holiday Classic. Belhaven will play Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham at 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT in Atlanta, Ga.
