CLINTON, Miss. – The Belhaven Women's Basketball team came up short in a comeback rally at Mississippi College Tuesday, losing 70-76 to the cross-town rival.
Tuesday's game was the first meeting in 15 seasons for Belhaven and Mississippi College on the hardwood.
The Blazers (0-2) fell behind early to the Choctaws (1-0), trailing 22-10 after 10 minutes, despite going on a 7-3 run to begin the game. Belhaven would make a charge in the second quarter, cutting the deficit in half, heading into the break trailing 39-33.
Candler Gregory gave the Blazers the lead midway through the third quarter with one of her career-high six three pointers in the game.
However, the Blazers were only able to hold the lead just once more over the next few minutes, as the Choctaws pulled ahead by as much as 15 in the second half.
Belhaven closed out the game with a 10-2 run to cut the deficit, but were unable to get any closer than six points.
Gregory finished with a career high 20 points in the game, connecting on six of nine three-point shots. Gregory also had two points from the free-throw line.
Sierra Pittman was the only other Blazer in double figures, finishing with 13 points and four rebounds. Pittman also had three assists and a steal.
Ieshia Dixon followed up an eight-point debut with nine points on Tuesday. Dixon also had three rebounds, two steals and an assist.
Vamikka Smith was two points shy of her first double-double as a Blazer, finishing with eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds. She also had a block, a steal and four assists.
The Blazers will be off for 15 days, as their next game will also be their home and conference opener on December 3 against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. The game is set to tip at 5:30 p.m. in Rugg Arena.
