JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Men's Soccer Team cruised past Talladega 4-1 on Tuesday night at the Belhaven Bowl.
Belhaven (6-3-1) saw
Cillian Thompson and
Lucas Talaveira-Befi each score two goals for the Blazers.
Thompson took care of the scoring in the first half with his fourth and fifth goals of the season. Thompson's first goal of the night came in the fifth minute from the right side by
Joravar Malli. His second goal came 21 minutes later, in the 26th minute, as
Nicolas Cornejo and
Lucas Talaveira-Befi help contribute to the goal in the box.
Talaveira-Befi took over the scoring prowess in the second half with back-to-back goals in the 57th and the 61st minutes.
Alex Hale contributed both assists for Talaveira-Befi's goals. Talaveira-Befi collects his ninth and tenth goals of the season, becoming the 28th men's soccer player to score 10 goals in a season.
With his first goal of the night, Talaveira-Befi collected his 15th goal of his career, making him the 19th player in Belhaven men's soccer history to accomplish this feat.
Talladega was able to get on the board in the 83rd minute to break the shutout.
Both the Tornadoes and the Blazers each took seven shots in the first half, but the Blazers defense was able to hold the Tornadoes in the second half to five shots attempted.
"Tonight was another example of team performance. We used many players tonight, and with two more matches this week, we needed to manage minutes," head coach
Carl Griffiths said. "Talladega had a very talented squad, but it could have been a different story with their chances in the first half. The boys are happy with the win and to move forward, but there are a lot of things that we need to fix to prepare for the second half of the season."
After Tuesday's match, the Blazers will return back to conference play with match ups at East Texas Baptist and LeTourneau. Both matches are scheduled for October 9 and 10, respectively at 3 p.m.
