SHREVEPORT, La. – The Belhaven volleyball team split the opening day of the Centenary College Tournament, falling to Austin College and defeating host Centenary at the Gold Dome on Friday.
In their first match against Austin College (Texas), Belhaven struggled in the first two sets, 16-25 and 11-25 respectively, but they fought to avoid the shutout with a 26-24 set that involved 19 kills and a .320 hitting percentage. The Blazers, however, would eventually drop the match in the fourth set 19-25 to the Roos.
The Roos dominated in the first two sets, out-killing the Blazers 31-16, but the Blazers countered by out-killing the Roos 33-31 in the final two sets.
Lauren Whiting and
Chae Levy contributed with 11 kills each in the match.
Jackie Gunderson notched her third double-double of the season with 10 kills and 18 digs.
Cassidy Fitzpatrick collected 21 digs, while
Kelly Aholt added 37 assists.
In the nightcap, Belhaven took on host Centenary, where the Blazers swept the match 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-23).
The Blazers (10-18) contributed eight blocks and 40 kills with a .259 hitting percentage for the match.
Whiting finished with 12 kills, good for a .323 hitting percentage and seven digs on the match.
Fitzpatrick collected 24 digs, while
Abbey Herman added 10 digs.
Gunderson finished the night with nine kills, six digs and three blocks.
Aholt totaled 24 assists, eight digs and three blocks in the victory.
The Blazers will wrap up the Centenary College Tournament as well as 2015 regular season on Saturday. Belhaven will begin the day with Rust at 2 p.m., followed by Dillard at 4 p.m.
