JACKSON, Miss. – Five Blazers scored in double figures Tuesday night as the Belhaven University Men's Basketball team defeated Rust College 100-87 in non-conference action.
Jordan Bedford led all scorers with 22 points on the night, including 19 in the second half to help the Blazers (7-13) overcome a halftime deficit to the Bearcats (6-13).
Datodrick Pinkston had a career night in the win for Belhaven. The senior guard scored 21 points, topping his career high of 20 points scored twice previously.
Pinkston also had nine rebounds and six assists in the game.
Josh Gaskin (19),
Jerrial Dawson (15), and
Josh Carpenter (10) also finished the night in double figures.
The Blazers had a solid night shooting, going 28-of-45 (.622) from the field. Belhaven was also 7-of-13 (.538) from three-point range.
Belhaven's defense held Rust to .477 shooting (31-of-65) on the night.
The two teams had very similar evenings on the glass. Belhaven had 34 rebounds and Rust finished the game with 33.
Belhaven finished with 14 turnovers while Rust had 13 in the game. A big difference in the game was Belhaven converted turnovers in to 23 points while Rust finished with 14.
Belhaven trailed just once in the game, as the Bearcats scored with the final basket of the first half to carry a 42-41 lead into the break.
The Blazers responded with a surge in the second half and the Green and Gold opened up as much as a 16-point lead late in the second half.
Belhaven will return to action on Saturday, when they host the University of Mobile in SSAC play. Opening tipoff is slated for 4:00 pm from Rugg Arena.
