Box Score PULASKI, Tenn. – The Belhaven University Men's Basketball team fell short in a comeback effort to Martin Methodist College Friday night 94-88 in the Blazers first game of 2015.
Belhaven (4-11, 1-3 Southern States Athletic Conference) started off slow, being outscored 51-36 over the first 20 minutes of the game. The Red Hawks (12-1, 4-0 SSAC) were able to expand on that lead in the early part of the second half, going up by as many as 17 points.
However, a strong second half push saw the Blazers trim the gap significantly, large in part to a game high 26 points from
Jordan Bedford and 20 points from
Jerrial Dawson. The duo went on to combine for 11 of the Blazers 13 three-point shots in the game, including seven in the second half to cut the deficit.
Datodrick Pinkston also had a big night for the Blazers, scoring 18 points while also securing a double-double with 10 rebounds. He also finished with a team high five assists.
Josh Carpenter and
Josh Gaskin helped the Blazers to five players in double figures, with each scoring 11 points in the game.
Statistically, Belhaven finished the game with one of the best shooting efforts of the season, going 34-for-67 from the field (.507) and 13-for-27 from beyond the three-point line (.481). However, the Blazers were also just 7-for-13 from the free-throw line.
Belhaven was outrebounded in the game 41-36 and the Blazers also committed 18 turnovers to just nine for the Red Hawks.
The Blazers will return to action tomorrow with a 3 p.m. CT tip off against Dalton State College.
