JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Blazers dropped their third straight Saturday afternoon, falling to the Campbellsville Tigers 31-13 in a Mid-South Conference West Division battle at H.T. Newell Field.
The Blazers (2-3, 0-2 MSC) managed to take a 13-11 lead into the halftime break, but 23 unanswered points scored by the Tigers (3-1, 2-0 MSC) led to the Blazers first home defeat of the season.
Campbellsville took the lead early on, scoring on a 30-yard touchdown pass followed by a 2-pt conversion on a fumbled snap to go up 8-0.
The Blazers answered back with two long drives. The first score came on a
Lamiquell Roberts 18-yard touchdown catch from
Mickey Forrest that capped off a seven play, 80-yard drive to bring the deficit to 8-7.
Late in the first half, Belhaven scored on its longest play of the season, a 74-yard catch and run by
Greg Livingston on a pass from Forrest. However, the Blazers failed on a 2-pt conversion attempt, giving Belhaven just a 13-8 lead after one quarter.
Belhaven was unable to generate any more points in the game, but took a 13-11 lead into halftime after holding Campbellsville to a 20-yard field goal in the second quarter.
The Blazers appeared to be in control most of the third quarter, but the Tigers were able to regain the lead with 1:25 remaining in the third quarter by way of a 10-yard touchdown pass to go up 17-13 following another missed 2-pt conversion attempt.
Campbellsville then capitalized on a turnover on downs in Belhaven territory, followed by an interception on the next Belhaven drive and turned both into touchdowns for Campbellsville, increasing the deficit to 31-13.
The Tigers first three touchdowns of the game came after Belhaven turned the ball over on downs and the final 10 points came from an interception and a fumble by the Blazers.
Forrest threw for 397 yards in the game for the Blazers, but his two interceptions in the fourth quarter proved costly, ending promising drives for the Blazers.
Campbellsville finished with just 156 yards on the ground, the lowest allowed by the Blazers against an MSC opponent this season, but the Tigers were able to throw for 233 yards, which was the second highest total against the Blazers through five games.
The Blazers defense did force two turnovers in the game, with an interception and a fumble.
Alvin Vaughn was able to get his helmet on a ball and
Steven Joiner recovered it for the Blazers one turnover. The second turnover came on an interception by
Curtis Hall. Hall was able to return the ball 37 yards following the interception.
Hall finished with five tackles in the game and also had two pass break ups.
Joiner led the way for the Blazers in tackles, finishing with nine total. He also had a sack in the game to go along with his fumble recovers.
Gregory Goree led the way for the Blazers with two of Belhaven's 10 tackles for a loss in the game, including 1.5 sacks.
On the flip side, Belhaven gave up 12 tackles for a loss in the game and five total sacks on Forrest.
The Blazers will have a week off before hosting Bluefield College in its annual pink game at H.T. Newell Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on October 11.
