JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Blazers dropped their fourth straight game Saturday afternoon, falling to the Bluefield College Rams on Saturday 45-27 at H.T. Newell Field.
The Blazers
(2-4) jumped out to a lead early with
Kadero Edley's first of three rushing touchdowns, but the Rams
(2-5) rushing attack totaled 446 yards and accounted for five touchdowns en route to handing the Blazers their first loss to Bluefield.
Edley finished Saturday with 32 yards rushing on six carries, but rushes of six, three and one yard for touchdowns accounted for three of the Blazers four touchdowns on the afternoon.
The majority of Belhaven's offense came through the air, but the Blazers also turned the ball over four times with interceptions.
Mickey Forrest was 30-of-59 for 434 yards and a touchdown. The lone touchdown pass came on a 21-yard connection with
Lamiquell Roberts.
Big plays were also costly as the Blazers gave up several in the game, including long runs of 85 and 70 yards and a kick off return of 89 yards. The 85-yard run was for a score and the other two set up touchdowns for Bluefield, who had combined for 30 points against Belhaven in their first two meetings in the series history and had a 31-21 lead at the half.
The Blazers had 10 different receivers with at least one catch in the game.
Greg Livingston led Belhaven with 11 receptions for 167 yards. Roberts finished the game with seven receptions for 139 yards and the one touchdown.
Gregory Goree led the Blazers on defense with 16 tackles, including 3.5 for a loss and 1.5 for a sack.
The Blazers defense reached the quarterback for five sacks in 10 total drop backs in the game. The secondary gave up just one completion on five attempts, a 5-yard touchdown pass.
Steven Joiner led the Blazers with two sacks for 12 yards and three of his seven total tackles came for a loss. Joiner also had a forced fumble strip and recovered it for the Blazers only turnover of the game.
Chris Smith had the other highlight on defense, blocking a 26-yard field goal attempt by the Rams.
Belhaven will look to rebound next Saturday with its homecoming game against Reinhardt on October 18. Kickoff is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start at H.T. Newell Field.
