Volleyball sweeps Lady Choctaws for second time

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven volleyball team picked up their seventh victory of the season on Tuesday evening, defeating Mississippi College in straight sets at Rugg Arena. The contest marked the second time in ten days that the Blazers have swept the Lady Choctaws in consecutive sets.

Belhaven (7-5) earned their third home victory with set scores of 28-26, 25-16, and 25-22. The Lady Choctaws suffered their first loss of the season to the Blazers on September 6th and have yet to rebound, dropping to 4-6 for the season on Tuesday.

"Mississippi College played really well and made the necessary adjustments," Head Coach Justin Dee said. "They have suffered some key injuries, but their other girls stepped up in a big way."

Amanda Cherry led Belhaven in kills with eight, while Jackie Gunderson and Jackie Rhyne picked up 14 and ten digs respectively. Senior Alyson Plyler assisted 15 of the Blazers' 37 kills, while freshman Kelly Aholt was credited with another 12.

For Mississippi College, Krista Zieschang picked up a dozen kills, while Sydney Chandler earned ten assists. The Lady Choctaws spread the wealth defensively, but Holly Tupper turned in a team-high ten digs.

Belhaven now will return their attention to Southern States Athletic Conference action and the 25th-ranked College of Coastal Georgia. Friday night's match is set to begin at 7:00 pm at Rugg Arena.

"Coastal Georgia gives our conference just their third ranked team in the last five years, so it will be a huge match," Dee said. "Our game plan in to come out swinging, but we will have to play lights out. If we play our best, we have an opportunity at a big victory."
